Why Watch the 1959 Journey to the Center of the Earth?

Icelandic scientist, Arne Saknussemm, claimed that it was possible for humans to travel to the center of the earth. Unfortunately, his claims were laughed at…that is until he mysteriously disappeared never to be heard from again. Years later, a hidden message from Arne falls into the hands of a geology professor, Sir Oliver Lindenbrook (James Mason), and his assistant, Alexander McKuen (Pat Boone).

Surprised but delighted by the discovery, the two men decide to test Arne’s theory themselves. Sir Oliver writes a paper and submits it to Professor Göteborg–hoping to receive input from this esteemed scientist. However, Sir Oliver is aghast to learn Professor Göteborg has stolen Oliver’s scientific research and is already on his way to the volcanic portal that will allow access to the center of the earth.

Sir Oliver and Alexander quickly join the race, but when they arrive in Iceland, they find Professor Göteborg murdered. Both men are baffled. Who else knew about the discovery? Perhaps, an equally important question is who would be willing to murder in order to claim this discovery as his or her own?

Making matters even more complicated, Professor Göteborg’s wife arrives in Iceland to assist her husband. Finding her husband dead, she quickly turns to Sir Oliver and Alexander for answers. Unwilling to believe her husband capable of stealing another scientist’s work, she refuses to help Sir Oliver or Alexander. However, after reading a portion of her husband’s journal, her unwavering faith is shaken.

Memorable Quote

“Alone…. Alone. It’s unthinkable, but it must be true. A man took some tools… and went where no human being has ever set foot. Alone. Into the interior of the earth…alone.”

~Professor Lindenbrook
